Laughter `s infectious nature increases happiness to those lucky enough to catch it, so how does a good chuckle, belly laugh, or all-out gigglefest trigger healthy effects on your body and improve your overrall outlook.

Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use

Laughter is strong medicine for mind and body

“Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health.”

~ Paul E. McGhee, Ph.D.

Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert.

With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health.

Laughter is good for your health
Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.

Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.

Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

Healing Power of Laughter

The Healing Power of Humor

Laughter is part of the human survival kit.” - Comedian David Nathan
You’ve probably heard someone say “laughter is the best medicine.” Maybe you were feeling sad, disappointed, angry, or hurt, and a friend or family member tried to cheer you up by taking you to see a funny movie or telling a silly joke. Perhaps they managed to tickle you out of your funk so that you could once again appreciate the simple and beautiful aspects about everyday life and experience gratitude for all that you have. With an uncontrollable smile and laughter escaping your lips, you probably agreed that there’s definitely something to the adage about laughter.

The Old Testament even references the healing properties of humor: “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” Although our ancestors couldn’t explain it scientifically, they knew intuitively that laughter was good for the body as well as the soul.
More recently Norman Cousins, in his book “Anatomy of an Illness,” describes how he cured himself of a debilitating disease through the use of humor. He reportedly watched old Marx Brothers movies and laughed uncontrollably. He believes his own laughter cured his disease. He subsequently lived a long and healthy life — well into his 80s!

Today we have a better understanding of how laughter affects human physiology. It:
  • Reduces pain. Our bodies produce pain-killing hormones called endorphins in response to laughter.
  • Strengthens immune function. A good belly laugh increases production of T-cells, interferon and immune proteins called globulins.
  • Decreases stress. When under stress, we produce a hormone called cortisol. Laughter significantly lowers cortisol levels and returns the body to a more relaxed state.
The other good news is that humor has a positive impact on intellectual and emotional functioning. It:
  • Helps put life’s trials and tribulations into healthy perspective by making them seem smaller.
  • Aids us in overcoming fear.
  • Allows us to take ourselves less seriously.
  • Triggers our creativity.
As you can see, humor can be the curative our ancestors professed it to be. But how can you incorporate more laughter into your life, when you are already overwhelmed by daily demands? Won’t humor be just one more thing to add to your “to do” list?
Fortunately there are ways to bring levity into your life without adding extra pressure. Find one of the following methods that works for you:
  • “Humor up” your work environment. Bring kids’ toys to work and keep them within reach. When you are stressed, take out a toy and play. That irate customer on the phone will have no idea that you are keeping your cool by playing with a Slinky. Place funny pictures of friends and loved ones around your office, including ones of you when you were a ridiculous-looking kid.
  • Create a humor file. Fill it with funny cartoons, sayings and jokes, as you run across them. When things are looking particularly grim, refer to your file. You’ll get a good laugh and be able to put things back in perspective in no time.
  • Create sitcom situations. When you find yourself in a nerve-wracking situation (such as locking your keys in the car), think of how Groucho or Lucy would handle it.
  • For recreation, do some of the things you did as a kid. Go to the zoo, an amusement park, bowling or swinging — the sky’s the limit! You’ll find that these activities completely take you away from all of that “heavy” stuff. And the escape will do wonders for your attitude.
  • Exaggerate a stressful situation. Take your situation and make it even bigger than it is. You might think this will cause more stress; however, blowing the problem up will allow you to see the absurdity of it, and afford you a great belly laugh.
  • Invite friends over for a “come as you are” party — and insist that they come as they are!
  • Host a slumber party. You’re never too old! Have friends bring pillows and blankets, eat junk food, and stay up all night telling scary stories. Trust me, this will provide you with a new perspective — a hysterically funny one.
You have a choice: You can continue to be a “grown-up,” and let all of the frustrations and disappointments in life weigh you down, or you can introduce levity into even the toughest circumstances. If you “let a smile be your umbrella,” you are likely to enjoy each day to its fullest and spend less time at the doctor’s office.

Secrets of a Happy Marriage

Seven secrets of a happy marriage
“Success in marriage does not come merely through finding the right mate, but through being the right mate.” – Barnett R. Brickner
Do you believe in falling in love? In finding that "special someone" who is your other half, your soulmate?    Do you dream of finding the one person in all the world who will understand you, love you and be there for you, no matter what?    If so, you're not alone. In fact, statistics show that about 90% of adults will get married at least once in their lives.

As a society, we've become so conditioned to the fairy tale of "Happily Ever After" that many people actually feel as if their life is lacking something if they're not a part of a couple.

But sadly, just like in the movies, most peoples' thoughts seem to stop at the part when the music swells and the happy couple says "I do" and loses themselves in that first magic kiss as husband and wife. They don't think about what happens after the honeymoon.

Considering that about 43% of all marriages in the U.S. ends in divorce, perhaps a class on the realities of building and maintaining a strong healthy marriage should become required before signing on the dotted line of a marriage license.

Having a happy marriage doesn't just happen by accident. It doesn't happen because you're "in love" or "perfect" for each other. Marriage is a partnership, and like any partnership, it takes commitment, dedication and hard work to help it to grow strong.

Here are some tips given by couples whose marriages are strong and healthy. Follow them, adapt them to work in your own marriage, and you'll be on your way to having what we all want -- a happy marriage!

    1. Communicate. It's important that you keep the lines of communication open. Especially when things go wrong. There are so many outside influences that can affect a marriage -- jobs, family, friends, hobbies, education, church. If you're suddenly not being able to spend time together, or you're fighting about money, it's especially important to talk about what's going on.

    2. Listen. It's a sad fact that we are often more polite to strangers than we are to the people we love the most. If your spouse is trying to talk to you, whether it's to find out what you want for dinner, to tell you about their day, or to discuss a problem in your marriage, give them the same courtesy you'd give a complete stranger, and LISTEN! Don't try to finish their sentences, don't try to solve their problems, and don't ever say, "I told you so!"
Here's an especially apt poem, written by poet Ogden Nash:

To keep your marriage brimming,
With love in the wedding cup,
Whenever you’re wrong, admit it;
Whenever you’re right, shut up.
    3. Create rituals and family traditions. Every successful couple has their own private rituals - things they do that has a special meaning just to them. So whether it's getting your spouse coffee every morning, a special touch that means "I love you", or creating couple signals for "Let's get out of here, or "No, I don't want to buy a timeshare for $95,000!" find your own. Remember some of your favorite childhood family traditions, and incorporate them or start new ones in your own couple. Some day, you'll look back on each time as a treasured memory.

    4. Go on a date. Couples who have been together for thirty, forty and even fifty years or more say that one of the things that has kept their marriage strong is going out on a "date" with their spouse on a regular basis. If money is tight, try taking a walk together, going to a dollar movie, or even to a drive-in. Spending quality "couple-time" helps to reinforce the special feelings that made you fall in love with each other in the first place.

    5. Agree on money matters early. Amazingly, many couples never discuss money except in the most superficial ways until after they're married. One of the leading causes of arguments in marriages is because of a difference in how money is handled. Before you walk down the isle, discuss your feelings about things like credit, paying bills and saving money. Talk about how you will pay expenses, and who will handle the money. Finding out after the fact that you have major differences is only going to lead to long term problems.

    6. Love and Respect. No matter what happens outside of your marriage, it's vital that you and your spouse always treat each other with love and respect. There are some simple rules that have worked for couples for the last 80 years that still apply today. They include: Never go to bed angry. Kiss each other every time you come home, or before going out. Say "I love you" every single day. Mind your manners, and say "Please" and "Thank-you." Do something for the one you love every day. Just because. Occasionally write love letters to each other. Laugh at his/her jokes, no matter how bad they are, or how often you've heard them. Don't sweat the little things. Try something new once in a while.

    7. Maintain a commitment to your marriage. This can be especially difficult today, but it's important that you put your marriage first. If you're committed to making your marriage a success, and you know that your partner shares your commitment, there's nothing that the two of you can't accomplish.

And you'll be one of the lucky few that have a truly happy marriage!

The Secret of Success

True Secret to be Successful In Life

“Some dream and never do. Others do and never dream. But then there are those very few who dream, and do what they dream”

The Secret of Success We are born to work, Yes its True. We must achieve something great in a limited time. This is our duty - a duty that every man or woman should bear. But what should we do in order to achieve success. If you want to be successful in your work, you must take this rule: one thing at a time. Indeed, this is a rule for anybody to follow. Some people are too ambitious. They want to do this and they want to do that. They want to do many things at one time, with the result that they accomplish nothing at all. Others are too idle. They do not know the value of time and they always put off until tomorrow what they should do today. They often say that they will do something by and by. In fact, they never do it.
Neither of these two classes of people can ever succeeded in any sense of the word. So let us do one thing at a time, if we want to succeed in our work. Many successful men say that they owe much of their prosperity to the cultivation of good habits in early life. Here are some rules that are helpful in forming a good life. Here are some rules that are helpful in forming good
habits. Honesty - "Honesty is the best policy" is a proverb to which we cannot well conform. There are so many temptations in the society that through a little carelessness we are led astray. Industry - every man, every woman, every boy and every girl, must have proper work to do. To do nothing

Over the years, its discovered that most successful people have 10 traits in common. And that these 10 traits -- together -- help successful people meet their goals and turn dreams into reality.

How many of these 10 secrets of success do you practice?

How you think is everything. Remember to “think positive” at every opportunity. Visualize success, not failure. Avoid negative environments and people.

1. How You Think is Everything.
Always be positive. Think Success, not Failure. Beware of a negative environment.
This trait has to be one of the most important in the entire list. Your belief that you can accomplish your goals has to be unwavering. The moment you say to yourself “I can’t…”, then you won’t. I was always given the advice “never say I can’t” and I’d like to strike those words from the dictionary.
I’ve found that from time-to-time my attitude waivers. A mentor of mine once said “it’s ok to visit pity city, but you can’t stay and there comes a time when you need to leave”. Positive things happen to positive people.
2. Decide upon Your True Dreams and Goals: Write down your specific goals and develop a plan to reach them.
Write down my dreams and goals? Develop a plan to reach them? You mean like a project plan? Yes, that’s exactly what this means. You may have heard the old adage: A New Years resolution that isn’t written down is just a dream, and dreams are not goals.
Goals are those concrete, measurable stepping stones of achievement that track your progress towards your dreams. My goal is to start a second career as a freelance writer – what are your goals?
3. Take Action. Goals are nothing without action.
Be like Nike and “Just do it”. I took action by reaching out and started writing. Every day I try to take some action towards my goals. It may be small, but it’s still an action. Have you taken action towards your goals?
4. Never Stop Learning: Go back to school or read books. Get training & acquire skills.
Becoming a life long learner would benefit us all and is something we should instill in our kids. It’s funny that once you’re out of school you realize how enjoyable learning can be. What have you learned today?
5. Be Persistent and Work Hard: Success is a marathon, not a sprint. Never give up.
I think every story of success I read entails long hard hours of work. There is no getting around this and there is no free lunch. But, if you’re working towards something that you’re passionate about, something you love – then is it really work?
6. Learn to Analyze Details: Get all the facts, all the input. Learn from your mistakes.
I think you have to strike a balance between getting all the facts and making a decision with incomplete data – both are traits of successful people. Spend time gathering details, but don’t catch ‘analysis paralysis’.
7. Focus Your Time And Money: Don’t let other people or things distract you.
Remain laser focused on your goals and surround yourself with positive people that believe in you. Don’t be distracted by the naysayer’s or tasks that are not helping you achieve your goals.
8. Don’t Be Afraid To Innovate: Be different. Following the herd is a sure way to mediocrity.
Follow through on that break-out idea you have. Ask yourself “What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?”
9. Deal And Communicate With People Effectively: No person is an island. Learn to understand and motivate others.
Successful people develop and nurture a network and they only do that by treating people openly, fairly and many times firmly. There is nothing wrong about being firm – just don’t cross the a-hole line. How do you deal with people?
10. Be Honest And Dependable: Take responsibility, otherwise numbers 1 – 9 won’t matter.

Help me find a career (Article)

How to choose career according to your personality ?

Help me find a career ? When I was in college my friend often asked this question but that time I was unable to give him Answer. Even I did not know how to help him but I just said one think! “ if you choose a career that doesn't suit your personality you become confused, unhappy and no one want to be confused in life. So instead of choosing a career based on what you think you should take some concrete step, use unique technique that will help you find a career that is right for you”

Now Its time to give answer of his question When you were little, people probably asked, "What do you want to do when you grow up?" Maybe you said a Engineer, or an astronaut. Maybe you said an actor, or a lawyer, or a doctor. With starry eyes, you dreamed of the day you would live in a rich mansion, with lots of maids and butlers. Then, a career seemed like something that would happen a lifetime away. But now that the time has come to choose, your interests have probably changed. Finding the right career for you can be difficult, but not
impossible.

Steps

Know yourself, and not just your name. What are your interests? What skills do you possess? Are you cheerful, bubbly, and a people-person? Maybe becoming a teacher is for you. Do you love to get out a saw and wood and create projects? Maybe an architect is the job you want. Spend an hour in a private place, or get together with a friend. Talk about the things you love. Write them down, and analyze them when you're done. See if you can put together an idea.

1. If you have an idea of what you want to do, Take Complete Knowledge! surf the web. Read as much as you can about your career choice. If you decide you chose wrong, analyze your skills again. Talk with a parent, friend, or professor about what they think.

2. Utilize several different job search techniques and do each of them well. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

3. Keep in touch with people who can positively influence your job search and career. In your future career pursuit, simple reference letter can be of crucial importance.

4. Try to learn about why you don't get every job you apply for. Learn from your mistakes.

5. Before you start applying for jobs ensure you know what you're looking for. A good job search is a focused job search. Make sure to tailor you Resume or CV according to job position that you are applying for.

6. Don't apply for job you aren't qualified for. One of the worst things is lying on your Resume. You might ruin your chances with a company for a job you are qualified for in the future.

7. Manage your references. Don't assume there isn't such a thing as a bad reference. There is. And it can cost you jobs.

8. Plan your career with a long term focus. Short term gain can cause long term pain.

9. Take command of your career. Don't rely on other people to get the job for you. Nobody    knows you better than your self, just do it.

10. Find a company that you are interested in working for. Look at their job listings and see what interests you. For example, if you like Facebook, then you could look at their job listings and see what they offer. This will help a lot!

Finding a right career for you

Some people know what job they want to do from an early age(childhood). For others it’s not so simple. Choosing a career is a big decision, but don’t be intimidated. There’s plenty of help available to help you find the career that’s right for you.

What type of career would suit you?
A good way to start your planning is to think about what motivates you as a person.
Make a list of activities you’ve enjoyed - both inside and outside school, college or work. What was it about them you liked? There are no right or wrong answers – but, for example, you might find that you enjoyed:

*                          getting to know more about a particular subject
*                         solving challenging problems
*                         working as part of a team
*                          meeting new people
Once you’ve got a clear idea of your interests, the next step is to start looking for a career that matches up with them.

Planning your career
Finding a rewarding career is important to most people - and it takes a little planning.
There’s always room to change your mind, but having a plan will:

*                        make sure you’re aware of all the routes into your dream career
*                          help you avoid ending up in a job you don’t like
*                         make sure you know what you need to do at different stages in your life
There’s plenty to consider before you’re ready to put your plans into action – including how to get the skills and qualifications you’ll need.

 Help planning your career
Advice is vital to give you the best possible chance of getting into the career you want.

Advice through school or college

Teachers and lecturers will have a good idea of what you can do with the subjects you’re studying. But they only see what you’re like at school or college, and this might not be the whole story.

For example, you may be quiet in the classroom but spend your spare time producing podcasts or working on hospital radio. If this is the case, there’s nothing to stop you pursuing a career in radio.
It’s worth getting advice from other sources as well: most schools and colleges offer careers lessons and/or a careers service.
You can also talk to a Careers Adviser.

 If you’re in higher education
You can get advice on your options after graduation from your university or college careers office, and there’s plenty of information available through the Prospects service.
·

     Advice from family and friends
It can be useful to get advice from the people who know you best, but they won’t always know a lot about the career you’re interested in.
Remember – it’s your career. You know what you’re good at and you know what you want to do. Don’t be put off if your dream career means taking a different direction from friends and family.

Conclusion:
In Short, No one tell you what career suit your Personality Because you are the one, who know What You want  in your life. It would not be wrong, if I say no one help you to choice your career dear even though, answer lie in you so Communicate yourself. You will certainly  find this answer from there.

NATURAL RESOURCES AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (Informative Article)

Mineral power and forest resources are the foundation of economic development. They help in giving an initial push to the raising of production in all sector of the economy. If the quality of manpower is high in a country. It will make the best use of the natural resources and attain development in the shortest possible period of time. Human and natural resources are thus both determining factors in economic development.

In this article we, briefly examine the importance, quality and the quality of the mineral power and forest resources available in Pakistan.

     1.MINIRAL RESOURCES

The minerals, like the forest, are the precious wealth of a country. These are extracted from earth. Some minerals like coal, iron, copper etc. are found in solid forms and some like gas, petrol, oil etc., are discovered in liquid shape.

Pakistan is quite rich in mineral resources compared to many other developing countries of the world. The mining sector has largely remained under developed due to financial constraint, heavy reliance on advanced countries for the discovery of mineral wealth, scarcity of trained personnel at home, etc.

1.Natural Gas.
The importance of natural gas in Pakistan has been increasing rapidly. It is used in industry to produce consumer goods, to generate electricity, to manufacture fertilizer & in the transport sector in its compressed from (CNG). To meet the increasing demand Government of Pakistan is making efforts to increase its production at present the balance recoverable reserve have been estimated at 26.62 trillion cubic feet. The production of gas per day stood at 4050.84 Millions cubic feet during July-March 2010-11 as compared to 4048.76 Million cubic feet during last year.

LPG: (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)

             3.POWER RESOURCES
There are various sources which geberate power. They, in Brief are: Coal, Oil, Gas, waterfall or River Currents, Nuclear, Solar, Biogas, Wind, Manpower and Animal

ELECTRICITY GENERATION

The total installed capacity of electricity generation stood 20681 mw in March,2010 compared with 2019 MW in March 2009. The share of hydel is 6555 MW (32%) and thermal is 14126 MW (68%) out of 14126 MW of Thermal Power, the share of different agencies involvement are as under.

Wapda                              = 4829 MW
Rental Power Plants         = 323 MW
PAEC                               = 665 MW
IPPS                                 = 8309 MW
KESC                              = 1955 MW

(A) Thermal Electricity Resources:

Pakistan has a sufficient large base of coal. Deposit over 175 billion tonnes have been discovered in Thar deserts of sind. The total coal resources are estinated at 184 billions tonnes. As  such the prospect of coal to be used in the iron and steel industry and for generating electricity are quite bright.

Conclusion

We have examined the various of energy and availability in Pakistan . We in the long run shall have to bank upon on hydel and solar energy for meeting the energy crises. The world scientist are of the view that the world is not facing a crises of energy but a crises of technology. The oil which is consumed in the engines uses only 17% of the energy potential and 83% of it is burnt as waste. Same s the case with nuclear reactor  which exploits and harnesses 1% of the energy produced by uranium. The Scientist of the world now hall have to develop the technology which uses 100% of the energy potential of oil.

Controlling Anger Before It Control You (Article)

10 ways to control your destructive anger - Professional expert’s advice
I am really emotional person. I think that there are two types of anger: constructive anger and a destructive one. In order to understand the anger phenomenon I decided to investigate the nature or Source of anger, reasons of its appearing, key factors and anger management.
The Nature of Anger ?
Anger is "an emotional state that varies in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury and rage," according to Charles Spielberger, PhD, a psychologist who specializes in the study of anger. Like other emotions, it is accompanied by physiological and biological changes; when you get angry, your heart rate and blood pressure go up, as do the levels of your energy hormones, adrenaline, and noradrenaline.
Anger can be caused by both external and internal events. You could be angry at a specific person (Such as a coworker or supervisor) or event (a traffic jam, a canceled flight), or your anger could be caused by worrying or brooding about your personal problems. Memories of traumatic or enraging events can also trigger angry feelings.
We all know what anger is, and we've all felt it: whether as a fleeting annoyance or as full-fledged rage.
Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems—problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. And it can make you feel as though you're at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion. This brochure is meant to help you understand and control anger.

There are 4 basic ways of anger expressions:

1. Straight and immediately (verbally or nonverbally) to show your anger. It gives an opportunity to free from the negative emotions.

2. To express anger in an indirect way. In this case usually suffer persons that are weaker, not dangerous and those ones who “come to hand”, usually they are our family and close relatives. Thus we hurt our dear ones. One of the best ways is to express your anger to the person who is the source of this very anger. If it is impossible- better find some compromise.

3. Restraining anger you “drive” it deep inside. So, negative emotions store will provoke a big stress sooner or later.

4. You may foresee situation of anger feeling, try not to expand this feeling but get to know the reason, understand and solve it. A Roman philosopher Seneca said: “When you are feeling of ascending “volcano”- stand still, not doing anything- not speaking, not moving.”

Anger is a normal and natural human feeling, especially nowadays as life is really fast and we have a huge amount of information to accumulate (in comparison with our previous generations). The range of anger is rather wide: from a slight annoyance to impetuous fury. Anger can be quick and long, lasting for years in form of bitterness, vengeance or hate. Anger can lead to health issues like depression, high blood pressure, hearth diseases, stresses, alcohol dependence and obesity. If you are anger- express it. If you feel discomfort from these “negative splashes”- then we can give some techniques how to manage your emotional anger:
  • 1. Take a deep and continuous breath. Count up to 50 or imagine your aggressor just naked, only in socks. This will help you to calm and smile.
  • 2. Have a walk. Look at high sky. Continue to breathe deep and easily. So you appraise the situation and calm down.
  • 3. Do some physical exercises. When you are angry- your body is very tensed and tough. If you stretch your muscles it will relax your body, as you will spill out all your negative energy into action. Your brains will get more oxygen and it assists to clear your thoughts.
  • 4. Write down all your thoughts. Write down that you are mad and why. Avoid being rational, logical or laconic. Write on paper all you are feeling this moment. Try to write all in details. The function of this technique is to shift all your anger out of your head on paper.
  • 5. Be grateful. Find someone to thank. Do you not forget about yourself. Thank that you have woken up today, thank that that the Sun is shining for you, that the sky is blue and the grass is green.
  • 6. Prayer. Ask God to be with you during this anger moment and lead you.
  • 7. Meditation. Close your eyes, look into solar plexus, and be all your anger, breathing deeply.
  • 8. Change of places. Move yourself on your enemy’s place. And look at situation from his point of view. Better look at the situation from the ceiling. Focus on details, especially on funny and absurd ones. Strive to forgive your enemy as well as forgive truly yourself.
  • 9. Go back to your childhood memories. Recollect state when you were angry. Hug this child and say: “All is ok. I am here. You are good child. I love you and I will not leave you.”
  • 10. Your values. What is the most significant thing in your life? Who are the most important people in your life? What kind of person do you want to be? Think and accept that point that you are living your life, and you are living your values. There is a good man inside you that wants to help you. I wish you good luck!

Bicycle History

"A Short Illustrated History of the Bicycle.

Vehicles for human transport that have two wheels and require balancing by the rider date back to the early 19th century. The first means of transport making use of two wheels, and thus the archetype of the bicycle, was the German draisine dating back to 1817. The term bicycle was coined in France in the 1860s

The Walking Machine

In 1817 Baron von Drais invented a walking machine that would help him get around the royal gardens faster: two same-size in-line wheels. The machine became known as the Draisienne or hobby horse. It was made entirely of wood.

The Velocipede or Boneshaker

The next appearance of a two-wheeled riding machine was in 1865, when pedals were applied directly to the front wheel. This machine was known as the velocipede ("fast foot"), but was popularly known as the bone shaker, since it was also made entirely of wood, then later with metal tires, and the combination of these with the cobblestone roads of the day made for an extremely uncomfortable ride. They also became a fad, and indoor riding academies, similar to roller rinks, could be found in large cities.

 The High Wheel Bicycle

In 1870 the first all metal machine appeared. The pedals were still atttached directly to the front wheel with no freewheeling mechanism. Solid rubber tires and the long spokes of the large front wheel provided a much smoother ride than its predecessor. The front wheels became larger and larger as makers realized that the larger the wheel, the farther you could travel with one rotation of the pedals. You would purchase a wheel as large as your leg length would allow. This machine was the first one to be called a bicycle ("two wheel"). These bicycles enjoyed a great popularity among young men of means (they cost an average worker six month's pay), with the hey-day being the decade of the 1880s.

Because the rider sat so high above the center of gravity, if the front wheel was stopped by a stone or rut in the road, or the sudden emergence of a dog, the entire apparatus rotated forward on its front axle, and the rider, with his legs trapped under the handlebars, was dropped unceremoniously on his head. Thus the term "taking a header" came into being.

The Pnuematic-Tired Safety

The pnuematic tire was first applied to the bicycle by an Irish veterinarian who was trying to give his young son a more comfortable ride on his tricycle. This inventive young doctor's name was Dunlop. Sound familar? Now that comfort and safety could be had in the same package, and that package was getting cheaper as manufacturing methods improved, everyone clamored to ride the bicycle. This 1898 Yale uses a shaft drive to dispense with the dirty chain.

The bicycle was what made the Gay Ninties gay. It was a practical investment for the working man as transportation, and gave him a much greater flexibility for leisure. Ladies, heretofore consigned to riding the heavy adult size tricycles that were only practical for taking a turn around the park, now could ride a much more versatile machine and still keep their legs covered with long skirts. The bicycle craze killed the bustle and the corset, instituted "common-sense dressing" for women and increased their mobility considerably. In 1896 Susan B. Anthony said that "the bicycle has done more for the emancipation of women than anything else in the world."

Bicycling was so popular in the 1880s and 1890s that cyclists formed the League of American Wheelman (still in existence and now called the League of American Bicyclists). The League lobbied for better roads, literally paving the road for the automobile.
Pnuematic-Tired Safety

The High Wheel Tricycle

High Wheel TricycleWhile the men were risking their necks on the high wheels,
ladies, confined to their
long skirts and corsets, could take a spin around the park on
an adult tricycle.
These machines also afforded more dignity to gentlemen such
as doctors and clergymen.
Many mechanical innovations now associated with the automobile
 were originally invented
for tricycles. Rack and pinion steering, the differential, and band
brakes, to name a few!

The High Wheel Safety

High Wheel SafetyImprovements to the design began to be seen, many with the
small wheel in the front to eliminate the tipping-forward problem.
One model was promoted by its manufacturer by being ridden
down the front steps of the capitol building in Washington, DC.
These designs became known as high-wheel safety bicycles.
Since the older high-wheel designs had been known simply as
bicycles, they were now referred to as "ordinary bicycles" in
comparison with the new-fangled designs, and then simply as
"ordinaries."

The Hard-Tired Safety

The further improvement of metallurgy sparked the next
Hard Tire Safety innovation, or rather return to previous design. With
metal that was now strong enough to make a fine chain
and sprocket small and light enough for a human being to
power, the next design was a return to the original
configuration of two same-size wheels, only now, instead
of just one wheel circumference for every pedal turn,
you could, through the gear ratios, have a speed the
same as the huge high-wheel. The bicycles still had the
hard rubber tires, and in the absence of the long,
shock-absorbing spokes, the ride they provided was
much more uncomfortable than any of the high-wheel
designs. Many of these bicycles of 100 years ago had
front and/or rear suspensions. These designs competed
with each other, your choice being the high-wheel's
comfort or the safety's safety, but the next innovation
tolled the death of the high-wheel design.

The Kid's Bike

Introduced just after the First World War by several manufacturers, such as Mead, Sears Roebuck, and Montgomery Ward, to revitalize the bike industry (Schwinn made its big splash slightly later), these designs, now called "classic", featured automobile and motorcyle elements to appeal to kids who, presumably, would rather have a motor. If ever a bike needed a motor, this was it. These bikes evolved into the most glamorous, fabulous, ostentatious, heavy designs ever. It is unbelievable today that 14-year-old kids could do the tricks that we did on these 65 pound machines! They were built into the middle '50s, by which time they had taken on design elements of jet aircraft and even rockets. By the '60s, they were becoming leaner and simpler.
